U.S. stocks extended losses on Thursday, with the S&P 500 falling slightly more than 2 percent, after worse-than-expected data on jobs and manufacturing triggered a broad sell-off.

* The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dropped 171.41 points, or 1.76 percent, to 9,540.87. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> fell 22.58 points, or 2.14 percent, to 1,034.50. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> lost 56.30 points, or 2.65 percent, to 2,066.12.
