Stocks opened lower on Monday on worries about the impact of Japan's devastating earthquake and tsunami.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 76.44 points, or 0.63 percent, at 11,967.96. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was down 7.53 points, or 0.58 percent, at 1,296.75. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was down 16.16 points, or 0.60 percent, at 2,699.45.
