U.S. stocks opened lower on Monday as a decision by the United States to impose special duties on Chinese tires sparked investor concerns about a possible trade dispute.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was down 61.89 points, or 0.64 percent, at 9,543.52. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> fell 6.29 points, or 0.60 percent, at 1,036.44. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> dropped 3.12 points, or 0.15 percent, at 2,080.90.
