Stocks turned lower in a choppy morning session on Friday after a survey showed consumer sentiment fell to its lowest level in five months as gas prices rose.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> dipped 20.29 points, or 0.17 percent, to 11,964.32. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> edged up 0.08 points, or 0.01 percent, to 1,295.19. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> fell 3.51 points, or 0.13 percent, to 2,697.51.
