The most-pirated movie in 2013 was actually a movie released in 2012.

“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey,” the prequel to the “The Hobbit” film currently in theaters, was downloaded about 8.4 million times on BitTorrent networks, according to estimates from TorrentFreak. The film was released internationally in Dec. 2012 and has grossed over $1 billion worldwide.

“Django Unchained” and “Fast and Furious” came in second and third place, respectively. Though they weren’t far behind “The Hobbit” in terms of downloads, both films made significantly less money.

The highest-grossing film on the list was “Iron Man 3,” which was the highest-grossing film of 2013 overall at $1.2 billion. With 7.6 million downloads in 2013, “Iron Man 3” placed in fourth on TorrentFreak’s list.

What's interesting is that some of the other highest-grossing films of 2013, such as "Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "Man of Steel," didn't make the list.

The lowest grossing film to make it into the top 10 was “Gangster Squad,” which was downloaded 7.2 million times despite only making $105 million.
