The girlfriend of the Las Vegas shooter retained a criminal defense lawyer upon her return to the United States this week. Marilou Danley, 62, is being represented by attorney Matthew Lombard of Lombard Law.

Lombard, a criminal defense attorney for more than 12 years, operates his own firm out of Los Angeles, California. Lombard worked on the defense for Terry Nichols, an accomplice in the 1994 Oklahoma City bombing, according to his professional biography.

Lombard lists his areas of expertise as white collar crimes, international extradition agreements, bank robbery, passport and social security fraud, identity theft, drug offenses, violent crimes and death penalty cases.

Danley, the girlfriend of Las Vegas shooter Stephen Paddock, retained Lombard as her lawyer when she returned to the U.S. from the Philippines Tuesday for questioning by the FBI as a “person of interest.” Danley was in the Philippines when Paddock rained a hail of gunfire Sunday on an outdoor concert in Vegas, killing at least 59 and injuring more than 500. Lombard read a statement on behalf of Danley to reporters Wednesday.

“I knew Stephen Paddock as a kind, caring, quiet man,” Lombard read on behalf of Danley. “I loved him and hoped for a quiet future together with him.”

Lombard himself called the shooting a “horrible, despicable act of violence” and said Danley was fully cooperating with the FBI.

“It never occurred to me in any way whatsoever that he was planning violence against anyone,” Lombard read on behalf of Danley. “He never said anything to me or took any action that I was aware of that I understood to be a warning that something horrible like this was going to happen.”

Danley also said confirmed in the statement that Paddock had wired her money and told her it was to purchase a home for her and her family in the Philippines. Danley said she believed it was his way of breaking up with her.

“I will cooperate fully with their investigation,” Lombard said on behalf of Danley. “Anything I can do to help ease suffering and help in any way, I will do.”
