“13 Reasons Why” may have been renewed by Netflix for a second season, but it seems that award-giving bodies are not as excited as the fans about the project.

According to Entertainment Weekly, “13 Reasons Why” has been completely snubbed at the 2017 Emmys despite Netflix nabbing a total of 91 nominations across its shows. “Stranger Things,” for instance, received a total of 18 nominations.

“13 Reasons Why” streamed in March and became the most-tweeted show of the year. The show delved into controversial topics such as bullying, rape, assault and suicide and was given a B+ rating by EW. Newcomer Katherine Langford, who played the lead role of Hannah Baker, wasn’t recognized by the people behind the awards show. Unfortunately, the real reason behind the snub has not yet been explained.

According to the awards show’s official website, the Emmys honor the best television programs. The people behind a particular show are the ones responsible for submitting their program to the award-giving bodies. All 22,000 voting members are eligible to vote on all 19 categories such as best drama series, best comedy series, best limited series, best television movie, best variety talk show and more. Peer groups among the 22,000 members of the Emmy board are the ones who vote on the best lead actress, best lead actor, best supporting actress, best supporting actor, guest actress and guest actor categories.

After all of the votes are in, they will be tallied and authenticated by Ernst & Young accountants. The official Emmy nominees are typically announced mid-July. Based on this information, it can be surmised that “13 Reasons Why” and its cast members did not receive enough votes to qualify as official nominees this year.

Meanwhile, Emmy snubs are not unusual. Every year, there are controversies involving the prestigious event. “Orphan Black” lead star Tatiana Maslany was snubbed several times before she received a Primetime Emmy Award for outstanding lead actress in a drama series last year. This year, Maslany wasn’t nominated again.

The 2017 Emmys will air on CBS on Sept. 17 at 8 p.m. EST.
