Supergirl
"Supergirl" star Melissa Benoist may crossover with the CW series "The Flash" and "Arrow" as early as this season according to remarks from all three series' producer. CBS

The CBS series “Supergirl” exists in its own little bubble, despite being run by a lot of the same people responsible for the ever-growing connected universe of DC Comics shows on the CW. Now, the producers are teasing a potential multi-network crossover event that would put “Supergirl” in the same connected universe as “The Flash” and “Arrow.”

With the two CW series crossing over at various points throughout their run, it wouldn’t be outside the realm of possibility for the heroes to do the same with Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) at some point in the future. With the CW being owned by “Supergirl’s” network, CBS, the only thing stopping the shows from existing as one unit are simply time constraints.

As CinemaBlend previously noted, the first hurdle standing in the way of a potential crossover was the fact that “Supergirl” initially debuted with a limited Season 1 order. However, the network took care of that issue by extending the first season to a full 20 episodes. Now, producer Greg Berlanti is saying that the building blocks may be in place for a crossover event with either The Flash (Grant Gustin) or the Green Arrow (Stephen Amell).

“I would love it, a lot of things would have to go right and people would have to say ‘Yes,’” he told Entertainment Weekly. “It would have to be figured out very soon. It would all have to be figured out in the next month or so. As it remains right now we’ve talked internally about how cool it would be but we haven’t had official conversations. [The CW chief Mark Pedowitz] is supportive.”

The comments from the network chief in question appeared in a recent Variety article in which Pedowitz put the ball in the court of producers like Berlanti, Marc Guggenheim and Andrew Kreisberg. As ScreenRant notes, not only do the above comments make it seem like bringing CW characters to CBS (or vice versa) is a possibility, but it could happen as early as this season.

While it would certainly be cool to see another super-powered hero from the DC Comics universe cross over with the likes of “The Flash,” “Arrow” and the upcoming team up series “Legends of Tomorrow,” there are serious canon implications to think of. While the CW series have played fast and loose with the intricacies of the DC Comics world in the past, the introduction of Supergirl also means that her allies, villains, storylines and, yes, cousin Superman, would all be introduced as fundamental realities on “The Flash” and “Arrow.” With the CBS series taking on lofty plotlines like Bizarro World in its first season, fans of the show might not want to see its writing staff have their hands tied by what may or may not work within the CW canon. However, with the recent introduction of NBC’s “Constantine” on “Arrow” Season 4, the minds behind these shows have proven that there’s almost nothing they can’t find a way to work around.
