David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson talked about the ever-changing dynamic between Mulder and Scully in a new featurette promoting the upcoming Season 11 of “The X-Files.”

“In the second movie (‘The X-Files: I Want to Believe’) we were married — we appeared to be married. And then when last season began, we appeared to be estranged,” Duchovny says of Mulder and Scully.

While Anderson sees Mulder and Scully as “friendly co-workers” and “friendly companions,” the actress reveals that the two are “closer” than they have ever been in the new season of the Fox series. In fact, in a never-before-seen scene from the new season, Mulder sort of asks Scully to go out with him on a date.

“I don’t wanna intrude,” Scully tells Mulder when he appears to have asked her to hang out with him.

“Come on. It will be like a date,” Mulder replies, nudging Scully to say yes.

The featurette also shows a scene where the two share some suggestive banter about Mulder’s prowess in handcuffs. “Why do you operate so well with your hands cuffed behind your back?” Scully asks Mulder who just took down an armed man without the use of his hands.

“As if you didn’t know,” Mulder responds naughtily.

Mulder’s suggestion that he and Scully have made love before is then confirmed by Anderson in the video. “I’d say we’re kind of back to where we were originally, but without the sexual tension,” the actress said. “Because we’ve already had sex.”

Duchovny revealed to TVLine last month that the “definite intimations of hanky-panky” between Mulder and Scully will start in the new season’s third episode.

The more intimate relationship between Mulder and Scully in Season 11 shouldn’t come as a surprise, as it was previously revealed that two join forces to search for their long-lost son William in this year’s installment.

Although the series took a long time before putting the limelight back to William, series creator Chris Carter told Deadline that the character has always been part of the show. “He’s been the absent center but I have to say that that storyline is explored further,” Carter said.

“The X-Files” Season 11 premieres on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at 8 p.m. EST on Fox.
