KEY POINTS

  • Jurgen Klopp joined Liverpool in October 2015
  • He has led Liverpool to four trophies so far
  • Liverpool won its first Premier League title in 2019-20

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is one of the most successful managers in European soccer. Having joined the Anfield side in October 2015, he helped them win four trophies in the next five years.

After the heartbreaking loss in the Champions League final 2017-18, Klopp’s Liverpool once again made it to the final the following season, and this time around, the result went in their favor, handing Klopp his first trophy with the Reds. Liverpool went on to win two more trophies: UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup before finally having their hands on their most-awaited triumph – the Premier League.

With 32 wins, three draws and three losses, Liverpool finished with 99 points in the 2019-20 Premier League, 18 more than second-placed Manchester City. Klopp became the first-ever manager to win the Premier League with Liverpool but overall, it was the club’s 19th league title.

While Liverpool’s rival clubs such as Chelsea, Manchester United and City are known to be big-money spenders, Liverpool, under Klopp’s management, have done some incredible bargain business. To date, Klopp has spent $679,851,687 (£514,050,000) in buying a total of 41 players, the club has earned $550,313,055 (£416,100,000) by selling 44 players; so Klopp’s net spending since his arrival in October 2015 has been just $129,543,772 (£97,950,000).

Here is a list of five greatest bargain signings under Klopp that have become a vital cog of the current Liverpool side:

Joel Matip – $0

When not injured, Matip is one of the most underrated center-backs in the Premier League and Liverpool signed him on a free transfer from Schalke in 2016. Even though injuries have hit his journey at Liverpool, Matip has always stepped up when needed. He reads the game superbly and is incredibly calm with the ball.

Andy Robertson - $10 million (£8m)

When Klopp signed Robertson in 2017, he was hardly recognized yet had enough Premier League experience for the German boss to rope him in. Liverpool paid only $10 million for Robertson, who would go on to become one of the best left-backs in the current generation. The Scotland captain has an incredible 43 assists and five goals as well in 193 competitive appearances for Liverpool and is easily one of the best signings of Klopp at Anfield.

Thiago Alcantara - $26 million (£20m)

Alcantara joined Liverpool on the back of massive experience at two major clubs, Barcelona and Bayern Munich. While he had won two La Liga trophies at Camp Nou, he won seven Bundesliga titles and a Champions League with Bayern. Landing a player of Alcantara’s quality at just $26 million was definitely a masterstroke from Klopp and Liverpool.

Sadio Mane - $39 million (£30m)

Bagging someone like Mane at $39 million was a steal for Klopp and Liverpool. The Senegal national has become a vital cog of Klopp’s side. He has netted 106 goals and 44 assists in 239 competitive appearances and has helped the side win four trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League.

Mohamed Salah - $45 million (£34m)

Since joining Liverpool in 2017, Salah has established himself as one of the best players in soccer. Game after game, the Egyptian King has made or broken records. Having scored 145 goals and 67 assists in 226 matches, Salah has been a major influence on Klopp’s Liverpool over the years. Salah, who moved from Roma to Liverpool at $45 million, has a current market value of $110 million, the joint-second most valuable player in the Premier League, according to Transfermarkt.
