Nothing is what it seems in “Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.” Season 3. Lash’s (Matthew Willig) human alter ego was revealed to be someone everyone trusts in episode 6, but he wasn’t the only one who got a dramatic reveal. Rosalind (Constance Zimmer) proved that she has a heart and the ATCU (Advanced Threat Containment Unit) showed exactly what they’re doing to the Inhumans.

May’s Mission: May (Ming-Na Wen) returns to S.H.I.E.L.D. to find Andrew (Blair Underwood) is still alive. He says that a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent was tailing him and created enough of a distraction to let him get away in the nick of time.

Coulson (Clark Gregg) takes Hunter (Nick Blood) off the Ward (Brett Dalton) assignment, and May asks to be put on it. She has officially returned to Coulson’s team to take out the villain. Coulson isn’t so sure she is back for good, but he puts her on the case anyway.

May’s first order of business is to attack Bobbi (Adrianne Palicki) to test her. Although medical tests say that Mockingbird isn’t completely healed, May says that she is in fighting condition and they’re leaving for a mission in 20 minutes.

Hunter tries to go with her, but his ex-wife won’t let him. He hopes she is really ready for this. “Do better than I did, yeah?” he says.

May reveals that she knows they’re looking for Werner von Strucker (Spencer Clark). She found a bank account that’ll likely lead them to him. They break into Werner’s safe deposit box, but they accidentally trigger an alarm at the bank. Bobbi tries to sweet-talk their way out of it, but they have to knock out all the guards anyway.

When they find Werner, Kebo (Daz Crawford) is torturing him, and there are plenty of other agents with him. Bobbi easily knocks out several men, and she electrocutes Kebo.

May tries to get information out of Werner. He explains to May what really happened when he went after Andrew. He says that Andrew morphed into Lash and killed the other Hydra agents. Andrew lit the fire after he turned back into a normal human. May is in disbelief that her ex-husband could be the Inhuman murdering other Inhumans.

Inside Hydra: Before Kebo finds him, Werner goes to Gideon Malick (Powers Boothe) for help. He fears Ward and needs Gideon’s assistance. The Hydra veteran calls Ward and claims he can help the new Hydra head. Gideon offers redemption and Ward says Gideon doesn’t even know what he is doing with Hydra. Still, Gideon says he’ll offer up Werner’s location. “Sometimes you sacrifice a player to play the game,” Gideon explains. “You just remember that when I come calling: I chose a side.”

Investigating The ATCU: Daisy (Chloe Bennet) has a theory that Lash is in the ATCU. He can transform into a normal human, and that means he could be hiding in plain sight. Mack (Henry Simmons) tells Daisy that he thinks Banks (Andrew Howard) could be Lash. After all, he had access to their location when Lash attacked. They go with Hunter to follow Rosalind’s right hand man.

They tail Banks to his home and wonder what they could do if he decides to stay in for the night. Hunter decides to take matters into his own hands and jumps out of the car with an ICER gun to knock out Banks. He says that they can test his blood for Inhuman DNA markers.

Simmons (Elizabeth Henstridge) says that he isn’t Inhuman, so they decide to investigate the ATCU facility on their own. They send an invisible drone to follow a package that turns out to be an Inhuman, but they aren’t just holding Inhumans. They’re being monitored in small boxes.

Meanwhile, Coulson is trying to see the ATCU facilities without breaking any laws. Rosalind claims she has an emergency and needs to reschedule his tour, but Coulson refuses to let her go anywhere without him. She takes Coulson to her home where police says someone tried to break in. However, nothing is actually missing. The S.H.I.E.L.D. director accuses her of staging a break in as a distraction and trying to get on his good side with baseball memorabilia and his favorite burgers.

Rosalind finally takes him to the ATCU facility and shows him where they’re keeping Inhumas. Daisy’s drone also catches Coulson being shown the project, and Daisy is concerned that Coulson doesn’t seem horrified. However, she can’t hear the justification that he receives.

Rosalind explains that they’re in suspension gel that keeps them alive and asleep but still healthy. She reveals that they’re working on a cure, and this is just like a medically induced coma until they’re better. Coulson realizes that she must’ve lost someone she loved. Rosalind’s husband died of cancer. She couldn’t cure cancer, but she thinks she can cure Inhumans.

The Portal: After Simmons’ revelation last week, Fitz (Iain De Caestecker) is dedicated to finding a way to reopen the portal. Hunter doesn’t believe they should save Will (Dillon Casey). After all, he’s the competition. However, Fitz quickly kicks Hunter out after he becomes annoying.

Simmons asks to run a simulation to reopen the portal, and Fitz reveals that he has run dozens of them and none work. He says they may have to explore options other than rebuilding the monolith. Simmons tells Fitz that he doesn’t have to help her if it’s too weird, but Fitz is determined to save his love’s ex-boyfriend. He promises to help, but his computer reveals that he is also looking up any information he can find on Will.
