AI is Expected to Cause Wide Societal Disruption. Anthropic is Devoting 5% of its Shares to Fight it.
Anthropic has already committed $200 million to research on economic disruption, including worker retraining, income support and the effects of automation.

Anthropic is preparing to set aside 5% of its shares for a new fund aimed at addressing the social and economic consequences of artificial intelligence, including job losses and the challenges workers may face as the technology becomes more widely used.
The company said on Sunday that the proposed Public Benefit Fund would be subject to shareholder approval, with its board authorized to increase the allocation by another 2 percentage points for every 50% rise in Anthropic's valuation above an undisclosed baseline.
The fund could support nonprofit organizations, provide direct financial assistance to certain groups or finance programs helping workers adapt to changes brought about by AI.
In its announcement, Anthropic said it had already committed $200 million to studying and addressing the technology's economic effects but believed additional measures might be needed as AI capabilities advance.
The company plans to establish the fund as a wholly owned limited liability company rather than a conventional tax-exempt nonprofit, allowing it to support different forms of financial assistance and public benefit programs.
Anthropic also said the shares held by the fund would not be used for political contributions or lobbying in the United States or internationally.
The company has not identified potential recipients or announced when distributions could begin. Further details about the fund's governance and the valuation milestones that could increase its holdings are expected in the coming months.
Anthropic's announcement follows growing concern among Americans about the effect of artificial intelligence on employment.
A Pew Research Center survey published in August found that 71% of U.S. adults believe AI will lead to fewer jobs over the next 20 years, up from 64% in 2024. Only 5% expect the technology to create more jobs, while 10% believe it will make little difference to overall employment.
Anthropic has been examining AI's effects on work through its Economic Index initiative, which analyzes how people use Claude across occupations, including software development, writing and other professional activities. The research focuses on tasks performed with AI and does not measure employment changes across the entire labor market.
In July, the company expanded its work with a $200 million Economic Futures Research Fund supporting external research into ways workers and communities could adjust to technological changes.
Its priorities include job retraining, income support, changes in workplace practices, public investment and approaches to distributing the economic benefits of AI more broadly.
Among the proposals being studied are wage insurance, extended unemployment benefits and assistance for workers seeking employment in different industries.
The research also considers longer-term financial support, including unconditional payments for people facing prolonged unemployment or reduced working hours because of technological disruption.
Anthropic has also encouraged proposals examining how governments and institutions could respond to changing labor demand as AI systems become capable of performing more complex tasks.
The new equity fund would operate separately from those research commitments and could provide Anthropic with another way to finance initiatives beyond academic studies. The plan also builds on charitable commitments made by the company's founders and employees.
Including those earlier pledges, the company estimates that roughly 20% of its equity will be dedicated to public benefit activities once the new fund is established.
That figure includes separate commitments by founders and employees, rather than shares that would all be controlled by the proposed fund.
The latest proposal comes as Anthropic prepares for a possible stock market debut, with an initial public offering reportedly under consideration for November. The company has not announced a confirmed listing date.
