Alexander Graham Bell Day is marked annually on March 7 to celebrate the Scottish-born inventor, who is credited with patenting the first practical telephone.

It was on this day that Bell was granted a patent for “transmitting vocal or other sounds telegraphically.”

On March 10, Bell made the now iconic statement, “Mr. Watson, come here. I want to see you,” through a transmitter.

His assistant Thomas Watson, who was in the next room, received the "call," and heard the voice clearly — thus, the first telephone call was made.

People around the world celebrate March 7 as a day of innovation and invention. The holiday is recognized by an official act of the legislature in Nova Scotia, Canada.

Here are some inspirational quotes, courtesy Brainy Quotes, from Bell to share on this day:

1. "Before anything else, preparation is the key to success."

2. "Concentrate all your thoughts upon the work at hand. The sun's rays do not burn until brought to a focus."

3. "Sometimes we stare so long at a door that is closing that we see too late the one that is open."

4. "A man, as a general rule, owes very little to what he is born with - a man is what he makes of himself."

5. "What this power is I cannot say; all I know is that it exists and it becomes available only when a man is in that state of mind in which he knows exactly what he wants and is fully determined not to quit until he finds it."

6. "Dumbness comes from the fact that a child is born deaf and that it consequently never learns how to articulate, for it is by the medium of hearing that such instruction is acquired."

7. "The nation that secures control of the air will ultimately control the world."

8. "I would impress upon your minds the fact that if you want to do a man justice, you should believe what a man says himself rather than what people say he says."

10. "My knowledge of electrical subjects was not acquired in a methodical manner but was picked up from such books as I could get hold of and from such experiments as I could make with my own hands."
