Volunteers
Volunteers rest at a lake after building a dam at a marsh called Zhada near Minsk, Belarus, in 2013. Several nonprofits offer spring break trips centered around volunteering. Reuters

Still not sure how to spend your upcoming spring break? Consider volunteering. Several nonprofit organizations have alternative spring breaks where college students and other young adults can help the less fortunate. Meals and lodging are often included -- just choose where and when you want to go.

Here are a few options organized by price. Registration is still open for all of the below:

El Paso, Texas - From March 8 to 14, volunteers can help build houses for low-income families in some of the poorest zip codes in the United States. You'll also visit Fort Bliss, help out at a food bank and eat a lot of Mexican cuisine. The fee is $250 after your flight. More info here.

Chicago, Ill. - Help Habitat for Humanity build homes in the largest city in the Midwest. You'll be working on the south side doing construction and rehab in West Pullman, but organizers will make sure you have time to explore. Registration costs $300. More info here.

New Orleans, La. - Spend a week helping the city continue healing from 2005's Hurricane Katrina. Break A Difference volunteers could find themselves working in urban gardens or leading activities for local youth. It costs $395 per person and includes excursions. More info here.

Cape Coast, Ghana - If you have an interest in public health, look into Projects Abroad's Ghana trip. You'll learn how to dress leprosy wounds, interact with kids at orphanages and give talks to community members about staying healthy. They're running missions all through March, and no medical experience is required. The project costs $1,495. More info here.

Dominican Republic - Go for eight days to a rural part of this culturally diverse country. You'll spend most of your time teaching children English, playing games and building schools in low-income communities. But Global Leadership Adventures promises you'll get beach time, too. It costs $1,899. More info here.
