KEY POINTS

  • Canelo Alvarez's future fights will only be contested at 168 pounds
  • Gennady Golovkin is a potential opponent after Avni Yildirim
  • Alvarez is looking to fight again during the Cinco De Mayo weekend

Canelo Saul Alvarez vs. Gennady Golovking III is gaining ground, but the camp of the former made it clear that it will be under their terms.

The trilogy will happen only at 168 pounds, according to Alvarez's trainer Eddy Reynoso, who stressed that they are not giving Golovkin or anyone else favors.

“Saul Alvarez is going to fight at 168 pounds moving forward,” said Reynoso. “We’re not doing any favors to Golovkin or anybody else in coming down in weight to 160 pounds."

A third fight with the Kazakhstani champion may only get clearer after February. As mentioned in a previous post, Alvarez is set to defend his WBC super middleweight title against Turkish foe Avni Yildirim.

The 29-year-old is the mandatory challenger to the belt and gave way for Alvarez's most recent encounter with Callum Smith to happen.

From there, it will be interesting who the Mexican pugilist will face next. Golovkin is someone under consideration, but Billy Joe Saunders is also lurking.

The Brit feels he has what it takes to deal Alvarez his second boxing career loss. The only loss that Alvarez suffered was at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2013.

After the February title defense, Alvarez could be fighting again by Cinco De Mayo weekend. According to Reynoso, negotiations are being done right now but nothing is secured.

“Canelo has been fighting the very best. We’re the A-side now. We’ll see what comes out of negotiations. We’re waiting on offers. We don’t have anything secured yet,” the manager-trainer stated.

Alvarez fought his first boxing main event as an independent boxer following a fallout with Golden Boy Promotions. The 30-year-old dominated Smith, dealing the British boxer his first career loss.

Yildirim and his team were among the many who watched the Alvarez vs. Smith clash. They vow to come up with a better showing, but the Mexican remains the odds-on-favorite.

As for Golovkin, he is open to the third fight with Alvarez but says that he is not solely focusing on that.

However, there could be revived interest following their respective performances. Golovkin stopped Kamil Szeremeta in the seventh round of their fight, an event held a night before Alvarez’s lopsided win over Smith.
