  • The update is meant to fix issues with FaceTime on the Apple Watch
  • The update came a day after the company released a new iOS update

Apple has released a new watchOS version, watchOS 6.2.1, to fix issues with the Apple Watch regarding FaceTime calls. The update was released a day after the company released an iOS update aimed at fixing issues with FaceTime on the iPhone as well.

Previously, Apple released watchOS 6.2 which brought several additional features and enhancements to the Apple Watch, 9To5Mac reported.

WatchOS 6.2 started allowing users to make in-app purchases for Apple Watch apps, included fixes for a playback issue that could happen whenever a user would switch from Wi-Fi to Bluetooth connectivity, and also allowed users in Chile, New Zealand and Turkey to take advantage of the device's electrocardiogram (ECG) and irregular heart rhythm notification features.

Apple Watch users who updated their wearables to watchOS 6.2, however, were unable to participate in FaceTime calls with devices running on certain iOS and macOS versions.

The new watchOS version "Fixes an issue where devices running watchOS 6.2 could not participate in FaceTime audio calls with devices running iOS 9.3.6 and earlier or OS X El Capitan 10.11.6 and earlier," Apple said in the release notes. Here's how to update to watchOS 6.2.1:

  • Via an iPhone

Apple Watch users can update their wearables by launching the Settings app on their iPhones, going to General Settings, then tapping on Software Update.

  • Via the Apple Watch

Those who don't want to bother using an iPhone can update their Apple Watch directly on the device. All they need to do is launch the Settings app on the wearable, tapping on General, then tap on Software Update.

Apple Watch users who update to watchOS 6.2.1 should be able to participate in FaceTime audio calls with others who use an iPhone 4S, an iPad 2, a third-generation iPad, a first-generation iPad mini, a fifth-generation iPod touch, as well as Macs running on the aforementioned macOS versions.

iOS update

Unlike the watchOS update, the latest iOS update, iOS 13.4.1, has some other fixes aside from the one meant for the FaceTime issues.

As per previous reports, iOS 13.4.1 has fixes for a Settings bug related to Bluetooth. Previously, choosing Bluetooth from the quick actions menu on an iOS 13.4-run iPhone's Home Screen would result in failure. The update fixed that.
