  • Asus is launching the new ROG Phone 3 later this month
  • This was revealed via Asus' new countdown page
  • The device might be the most powerful Android handset yet

Asus will be unveiling its latest gaming smartphone – and what could be the most powerful Android handset yet – in a few weeks' time.

Taiwanese tech giant Asus has created a new countdown page for a “Game Changer” event on July 22. The company plans to unveil its latest entry in the gaming smartphone market, the ROG Phone 3, during this event, which can be viewed online from Taipei (at 11 p.m. UTC+8), Milan (at 5 p.m. UTC +2) and New York (at 11 a.m. EDT).

Asus didn't provide any of the device's details, but XDA Developers was able to acquire them via a listing on the Chinese regulatory agency TENAA, as well as a leaked real-life photo of the device. The image shows a smartphone that looks largely similar to its predecessor, but the specs in the TENAA listing indicates that it's far more powerful than the previous model.

The specs even led XDA Developers to claim that once the ROG Phone 3 is launched, it will “likely be the most powerful Android smartphone on the market,” overtaking other gaming phones. Here's a quick look at the potential specs, based on the report.

CPU & GPU

The ROG Phone 3 will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865, which has one overclocked “Prime” core that has a 3.091GHz max clock speed. Three performance cores will presumably clock at 2.4GHz while four efficiency cores will presumably clock at 1.8GHz. The CPU is paired with an Adreno 650 GPU.

Memory & Storage

Gaming phones need a lot of RAM to take on intensive games. Asus knows that and plans to release the device with configurations of 8GB, 12GB and a whopping 16GB of RAM. The handset might also come in 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage configurations.

Display

The ROG Phone 3 will feature a wide 6.59-inch AMOLED display with FHD+ resolution (2,340×1,080). It won't have a notch or hole-punch cutout. The refresh rate is unknown at the moment, but it is expected to feature 120Hz refresh rate at the minimum.

The device is also expected to feature the following:

  • A battery rated at 5800mAh (6000mAh typically) and support for 30W fast charging via USB-C
  • A rear camera setup comprised of 64MP main, 13MP secondary and a telephoto camera
  • Android 10 out of the box, overlaid with ROG UI
