M&Ms will soon be adding a new variety to their colorful list of flavors. This follows a strong tradition of Mars -- the candy's maker -- thinking up bizzare twists on the traditional M&Ms flavors. Reuters

For the ideal sweet treat to celebrate your birthday, all you'll soon have to do is rip open a bag of M&Ms.

Arriving next May, Birthday Cake M&Ms will be the newest addition to the bite-size candy's catalogue. Candy Blog reports that the product is scheduled to be presented by Mars at the Association for Convenience & Fuel Retailing show (NACS) in Atlanta this October.

It hasn't been detailed exactly what the "birthday cake" flavor will taste like. Mars/CandyBlog
Though no details have yet been provided about what the "birthday cake" flavor will actually taste like, it is likely it will be a variation one or several cake shop favorites such as vanilla poundcake or chocolate cake. The announcement obtained by Candy Blog simply describes the M&Ms as "delicious milk chocolate infused with birthday cake flavor creates an exciting new treat worth celebrating."
And true to M&M lovers standards, the new flavor will be available in single serve and 8-ounce packages -- perfect for sharing.
It isn't known if the new flavor will be a limited edition offering or a permanent addition to the lineup. But either way, the variety will be in good company, joining the ranks of past experimental M&M flavors like Pumpkin Spice M&MS and the largely hated White Chocolate Carrot Cake M&Ms from this past Easter.
Other new candy releases coming next year include Twix Unwrapped Bites -- mini versions of a Twix bar. Snickers' Rockin' Nut Road bar will also be making a return following its initial release in 2008. The bar contains marshmallow flavored nougat that is covered with almonds and dark chocolate.
