KEY POINTS

  • Yordenis Ugas is open to giving Manny Pacquiao a rematch
  • Pacquiao remains undecided on his future after a loss to Ugas
  • Ugas hails Pacquiao as the "greatest fighter who has ever lived"

WBA welterweight champion Yordenis Ugas defied oddsmakers last weekend when he scored a unanimous decision win over Manny Pacquiao.

Unlike other boxing fights, there was no controversy raised this time around. Ugas fought well, showing everyone that he made the most out of the 11 days' notice.

Pacquiao has yet to decide on whether they will fight again or not. That is something most are awaiting, complicated by the fact that he also needs to address his political ambitions in 2022.

The word going around is that Pacquiao may run for the Philippine presidency. The 42-year-old plans to make a formal announcement in September to address that.

As for Ugas, he is open to a rematch with Pacquiao if the Filipino boxing icon wants one.

“You know, Manny’s a great legend, great fighter. You know, if he wants a rematch, no question about it. You know, a legend like that deserves it,” Ugas stated.

However, there are multiple factors to consider. Aside from his political plans, there is his age.

Pacquiao is due to turn 43 in December, and most heard him say that his mobility was not there when he faced the 35-year-old Cuban.

Based on the tone of Pacquiao during the post-fight scrum, he appeared undecided and said that he was already happy with what he has done for boxing.

“In the future, you might not see Manny Pacquiao again to fight in the ring,” Pacquiao stated. “I don’t know. But for how many decades, I am so happy for what I have done in boxing.”

For Ugas, he will forever be grateful to the future boxing Hall of Famer regardless if they fight again or not.

“He’s a great legend, one of the greatest fighters that ever lived. So, I’m always gonna respect him. I’m always gonna look up to him because not only is he a great fighter, he’s a great human being and a class act,” Ugas said.
