  • Man Utd defeated Villarreal 2-1 in the Champions League
  • Ronaldo scored an extra-time winner
  • His goal was assisted by Jesse Lingard

Bruno Fernandes believes along with Cristiano Ronaldo, Edinson Cavani and Anthony Martial will be "really important" for Manchester United.

Ronaldo netted an extra-time winner to help Manchester United defeat Villarreal 2-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday.

"We knew it with Cristiano, at any moment, every ball in the box could be a goal. As you see, we started to make a little bit more crosses, we started to attack more down the wings and make crosses, put the ball in the box, because we know Edi and Cristiano at any moment with the ball in the box, whether it bounces or goes towards the keeper, they have the feeling," Fernandes told MUTV after the Red Devils' nail-biting win at Old Trafford.

Fernandes, who came under the radar for missing a penalty in Manchester United's previous league game, went on to add that Ronaldo, Martial and Cavani will score many goals in the remainder of the 2021-22 season.

"They are the strikers who have the feeling for the goal. They feel it and Cristiano did it once again, and he will do it more and more in the current season. He and Edi and Anthony will be really important for us because they will score many, many goals," added Fernandes.

However, Martial remained an unused substitute during the Villarreal game and Cavani spent just 15 minutes on the field after coming off the bench for Paul Pogba at the 75th minute.

In the first half, Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea made quite a few saves to keep the Villarreal attackers at bay. At the beginning of the second half, Paco Alcacer netted one from close range to put his side 1-0 up.

A few minutes later, Old Trafford saw an absolute genius from Alex Talles as he smashed a volley from 20 yards into the bottom corner. The fans in the stands erupted as the hosts were right back into the game with the equalizer. Jesse Lingard assisted Ronaldo's 95th-minute strike to secure the game for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

"I always had the feeling we would win the game, also when they scored I feel we could come again and turn it around. After the goal of Alex, everyone feels the atmosphere was unbelievable. The push from the fans was incredible," added Fernandes.

The 2-1 win over Villarreal is a great result for the Red Devils in the Champions League after they had lost their opening fixture of the competition to Swiss club Young Boys.
