A 24-year-old man was gored to death by a bull with flaming horns in Spain.

The incident took place Sunday in the town of Vallada in Valencia during the annual bull-running event. The festival-goers watched in horror as the animal charged at the man and pinned him to the ground, Hardware Zone reported.

The victim, identified as Adrian Fernandez, suffered a ruptured spleen and several other internal injuries as a result of the assault. Fernandez was reportedly transported to a hospital, where he later died.

Annual bull-running festivals are a prominent part of Spain's culture, during which a runner showcases his bravado by confronting a raging bull that has its horns set alight.

The incident happened when the festivities were being held by the municipality of Vallada in honor of San Bertomeu, a patron saint, according to the Spanish news channel Antena 3. The celebrations began on Aug. 14 and were scheduled to end on Aug. 28.

The crowd in attendance at the much controversial festival cheers the runner as he skilfully dodges the bull from hitting him. The bull with ignited horns is known as "toro embolado," which roughly translates to "bull with balls."

However, as the bulls are set free with balls of fire on their horns, they are likely to act up due to the severe burning sensation.

Visuals in a video posted on YouTube show the bull skewering the young man to the ground in front of the horrified onlookers, who appear to stand on the other side of metal railings meant for protection. Two other men, who appear to be in charge of security, are seen struggling to dissuade the bull.

The city council suspended the bullfighting night following the tragic death, and a minute of silence was observed the next morning at the town's Plaza Mayor in honor of the victim.

The settlement has also sent its condolences to the victim's friends and family, according to Antena 3. The victim had reportedly traveled from the nearby town of Almansa to take part in the day's celebrations.
