Cain Velasquez has earned millions as a professional wrestler and mixed martial artist. Here's a look at his impressive wrestling record and how he made his fortune.

The 39-year-old California native, who currently appears for Lucha Libre AAA Worldwide, has an estimated net worth of $4 million as of 2022, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Velasquez, born in 1982 in Salinas, California, originally wanted to be a boxer but because his family was too poor to afford a pair of gloves and boxing lessons, he took up wrestling instead.

During his senior year in Kofa High School, he was captain of the wrestling and football teams. During his college days, he wrestled for Iowa Central Community College and Arizona State University.

Velasquez, who was the first major Mexican-American heavyweight champion in MMA history, made his MMA debut in October 2006.

Over the years, the two-time UFC heavyweight champion beat opponents such as Jeremiah Constant, Brad Morris and Jake O'Brien. He also emerged victorious in the first round against Denis Stojnic, Cheick Kongo, Ben Rothwell and Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira.

After winning against Nogueira, Velasquez got a chance at the UFC Heavyweight Championship against reigning champ Brock Lesnar. He managed to best Lesnar with a technical knockout (TKO) in the first round, but Velasquez also tore his rotator cuff in that match and had to undergo surgery.

Velasquez later returned to the octagon in late 2011 after he recovered from his injury, beating Antonio Silva and defending his heavyweight title against Junior dos Santos.

The years from 2015 to 2019 reportedly saw the decline of the career of Velasquez, who lost to Fabricio Werdum and Francis Ngannou. Despite his loss, he reportedly earned $450,000 for his fight against Ngannou.

In 2019, Velasquez announced his retirement from MMA. In that same year, he joined WWE. He made his debut on Oct. 4, 2019, on the first episode of the 20th season of Fox's "SmackDown."

In April 2020, WWE released Velasquez from his contract after six months and just two matches. His release was part of WWE’s staffing cuts to deal with the financial fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Velasquez made headlines earlier this week after he was arrested Monday on suspicion of attempted murder and booked into Santa Clara County jail in California.

San Jose Police Department said Velasquez allegedly shot a man, whose name has not been disclosed, at least once near the intersection of Monterey Highway and Bailey Avenue in San Jose. The victim was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Multiple news sites have reported that Velasquez may have been shooting at a man he believed had molested a child closely related to the ex-MMA fighter.

Velasquez is being held without bail, ESPN reported, citing online records. He has a court date set for Wednesday.
