  • Newton won the NFL MVP in 2015

Cam Newton made $22.2 million in 2020 despite the NFL being suspended indefinitely due to the COVID-19 outbreak.

The former Auburn Tigers football star was drafted first overall pick by the Carolina Panthers in 2011. He quickly turned the fortune of the franchise around and collected various hardware along the way. As the former Heisman trophy winner, a lot was expected of him and he delivered. According to Celebrity Net Worth, Newton became the first rookie to register 400 yards in a season opener.

The College Park, Georgia native spent nine years as a Panther. He remains one of the biggest stars in the NFL and has endorsements with Under Armour, Beats, Atrium Health and Vinta Supply. Aside from his NFL salary, Newton also has a Youtube channel and a production company. As a result, Forbes ranked him as the 97th highest earning athlete in 2020.

Newton cemented his superstar status in 2015 after leading the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots. However, the Panthers would go on to lose the game and the Super Bowl win remains elusive for the quarterback. This time, he has the chance at redemption and ironically, by joining with the team that beat him.

The New England Patriots announced they will be signing Newton to a one-year deal. Experts claim the multi-titled franchise is testing the QB if he can lead the franchise and take over the spot of longtime leader Tom Brady who defected to Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the offseason.

Newton is coming off a myriad of injuries that limited his play time and performance in the past two years. In 2019, he suited up for just two games and in 2018, he only played a total of 14 games. Bill Belichick hopes that a new environment would rejuvenate Camton’s career. When healthy and focused, he can be as good as anyone. The former NFL MVP registered 35 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2015, per Boston.com. Now, in a team loaded with star power and a genius coach, Patriots fans are eager to see what the team can do and achieve in the post-Brady era.

Signing Newton is a small risk, big reward move for New England. If he can prove he still has a lot left on his tank, his contract can get extended for a couple of years. At 31 years old, Newton knows he has to make this partnership work. If all else fails, the Patriots can unload him next year or let him walk away in the free agent market. The team can take a compensatory 2022 third-round pick to beef up the roster, but it still depends on how the other quarterbacks in the team perform, specifically Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer.

The pandemic caused major sporting events around the world to be suspended indefinitely. However, some of the leagues have started but without live fans in attendance.
