KEY POINTS

  • The New England Patriots are entering the upcoming season with the unique predicament of a different star quarterback
  • Tom Brady was the franchise player of New England but has moved on to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • The signing of Cam Newton Puts New England ahead over the Buffalo Bills in the latest AFC East predictions

The Cam Newton free agency saga has finally ended when it was reported that the star quarterback has made a deal with the New England Patriots. The departure of Tom Brady from the New England Patriots has caused a free-for-all chase in the AFC East but this blockbuster deal has placed a new direction in the latest season predictions.

When Brady announced his exit from the Patriots, it was expected that teams such as the Buffalo Bills step up as the immediate favorites in their division. The Bills finished the 2019 campaign with a 10-6 slate. While they qualified for the playoffs, they fell short against the Houston Texans during the Wild Card round.

With the Bills showing some promise in the previous year, they’re looking to bounce back even stronger in the coming season. They recently acquired wide receiver Stefon Diggs in a trade with the Minnesota Vikings in the recently concluded NFL draft. This positions their offense stronger with the combination of Diggs and Frank Gore.

If the Newton signing didn’t happen, the Bills were in a good position to take over the AFC East. But that wasn’t the case as Newton made waves online with the news of joining Bill Belichick’s squad. It has been a rough few months for Newton as multiple rumors have circulated regarding his status. There was a point that he was linked to the Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Rams and several other teams.

It’s been difficult lately for Newton to display his current physical condition given the global pandemic. The 2015 First-team All-Pro has been one of the biggest names in the league. But with a fresh start and a chance to follow the footsteps of one of the greatest signal-callers of all time, Newton is ready to make an impact for his new team.

Per Sports Betting Dime, the signing of Newton puts the Patriots at +105 in the odds rankings, overtaking the Bills who are slated at +160.

The addition of the 2015 NFL MVP brings hope for the Patriots faithful that they'll be back to a deep postseason run. While Brady has put up a legendary career in New England with six Super Bowl championships, Belichick is more than ready to bounce back with a new team in the succeeding seasons.
