A bomb exploded near a Syrian military airport outside Damascus Sunday night, CNN reported. It led to a massive fire at the Al-Mazzeh airport that was subsequently put out. The area around the airport is home to several embassies and members of Syrian President Bashar Assad’s inner circle, CNN said.

Syrian state television first reported the explosion. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights told Al Jazeera the explosion was caused by a car bomb and that both ambulance sirens and gunfire had been heard in the area. Some casualties were indicated, but no numbers have been reported yet.
