At least two people were dead and seven others injured in a shooting incident that took place in northern Charlotte, North Carolina, around midnight Sunday (June 21).

Speaking to reporters early Monday, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Deputy Chief Johnny Jennings said the incident took place during an “impromptu block party” on Beatties Ford Road. Deputies and emergency services responded to the scene after receiving information that a pedestrian was hit by a vehicle.

The officers found hundreds of people in the streets and heard several shots being fired, which scattered the crowd. While trying to flee the scene, five people were struck by vehicles and were injured.

Jennings confirmed that two people were pronounced dead at the scene and seven others had gunshot wounds. He added there was evidence of multiple shooters, however, the suspects are yet to be arrested. The officer said the people were on the street in continuation of Juneteenth celebrations. Investigation into the case was ongoing and no additional details were available. The condition of the injured was not known.
