  • Werner revealed that Frank Lampard was a major influence for his transfer

Scoring star Timo Werner revealed that one reason for his transfer to Chelsea was due to Frank Lampard’s influence. The former RB Leipzig standout opted to sign a five-year deal with the Blues.

The current value of Werner is estimated to be at 64 million Euros. The highly touted athlete eventually chose Chelsea due to the relationship that Lampard established early on in their recruitment stages.

But finalizing the deal for Chelsea took some unexpected turns along the way. Teams such as Liverpool were also a perceived location for Werner and proved to be competition for the star player. The transfer to the Reds didn't push through as the economic effects of the coronavirus had the front management rethink their recruitment strategies, per Sky Sports.

The forward reflected on these moments and shared his thought process when he was in the middle of the transfer talks.

"Yes, I think when I decided to leave Leipzig I talked to different clubs and next to Chelsea I spoke to other clubs," Werner said as reported by Goal.

Throughout his career, Werner has developed as a sensational athlete who can dictate the pace of any match with his scoring abilities. In 159 appearances with RB Leipzig, he has netted 95 goals and tallied 40 assists.

"For me, I don’t want to talk too much about other clubs,” Werner continued.

In his Premier League debut with Chelsea, he suited up for 90 minutes and marked one assist in their 1-3 victory against Brighton & Hove Albion.

"Of course, there are some other clubs like Liverpool have a great team. Maybe I could fit in other teams but, in the end, I decided Chelsea because it was the best decisions I could take. Not only the style of football but because of what they shown to me,” Werner added.

It was the connection Werner shared with Lampard that eventually convinced him to finalize the deal and suit up for Chelsea.

"I think the whole Premier League fits very well to my style of football, because it's so fast, and fast players have really good space to go there and play well. It was really important that he gave me the feeling that the system he wants to play will fit me very well,” Werner shared.

The expectations were set early on between Lampard and Werner that proved to be crucial in formalizing the deal.

"The conversation with him was also really important, he's a very nice and calm guy, who makes it clear what he wants and what his football style is and he makes it clear that you're not only a player but also a person. He doesn't see you as only a footballer and that's important for me," Werner expressed.

It will be interesting to see how Werner will develop under Lampard’s leadership and if they can propel Chelsea to the next level.
