  • Chelsea starts plotting future with Sharman-Lowe signing
  • Sharman-Lowe to continue playing on loan with Burton Albion
  • Blues still looking for a reliable goalkeeper

Chelsea FC is still looking to improve its goalkeeping position with Frank Lampard left unimpressed with Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero. Several names have been linked to the Blues but nothing has gained ground. However, the signing of 17-year-old Teddy Sharman-Lowe allows Chelsea to expand options moving forward.

Chelsea has come to terms with Burton Albion for Sharman-Lowe though details were undisclosed. He will remain at Burton on a season-long loan but is someone that Lampard is planning to squeeze in moving forward.

Sharman-Lowe joined the Brewers in 2017 after being acquired from Leicester. The 17-year-old had a credible 2019-20 campaign, making the first-team and attracting the attention of several clubs. Sharman-Lowe could not hide his excitement, aware that he could be the Blues goalkeeper in the future.

"I’m excited to be joining such a great club, especially as they are known for bringing on young players," Sharman-Lowe said via Burton's official website. "It has all happened in a flash, from playing for the first team in pre-season, and then joining a top-four Premier League contender.

It turns out that the Blues were one of the clubs keeping a close watch on the progress of the teenage shot-stopper. Burton manager Jake Buxton is happy for Sharman-Lowe, narrating how they arranged for Chelsea's Head of Recruitment to check the lad out. No less than Petr Cech cam to watch the teenager, Goal reported.

“We had a conversation with Teddy and his parents and said if he can stay with us and develop that would be great, and he’s proved he’s more than capable of being an important part of the goalkeeping mix here this season," Buxton said. “He’s a cracking player but he’s also a smashing lad, his parents should be proud of how he is growing up."

Adding Sharman-Lowe may not be felt for now as he continues playing for Burton. But Lampard is serious about a change in goalkeepers as the spending spree continues.

Among the names linked to the Blues include Dean Henderson and Jan Oblak. Chelsea's run for Henderson has officially been foiled after the Spanish 23-year-old signed a new deal with Manchester United.

Instead, Chelsea has set its sights on Edouard Mendy of Stade Rennais FC. The Blues have offered an improved bid for Mendy after their previous $20 million pitch was thumbed down. He is seen as a cheaper option to Oblak with Atletico Madrid seeking $145 million for the Slovenian goalkeeper.
