KEY POINTS

  • The Chiefs take chance on Kadarius Toney
  • Toney's injuries may be a cause for concern for the Chiefs
  • Patrick Mahomes will have another receiving option once Toney is cleared to join the Chiefs

The Kansas City Chiefs have reportedly come to terms with the New York Giants on a trade that involves receiver Kadarius Toney.

As part of the deal, the Giants will acquire a 2023 third-round conditional draft pick and a sixth-round selection.

The third-round conditional draft pick is the same one the Chiefs got when the Chicago Bears hired Ryan Poles as their general manager earlier this year.

However, the trade has yet to be finalized until the 23-year-old passes his physical examination.

The former Florida Gator struggled to get going with the Giants under head coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen.

However, this did not discourage multiple unnamed teams from what the 20th pick of the 2021 NFL Draft had to offer.

Moreover, Schoen previously said that they were not dangling Toney on the trading block.

"We just thought it was for the best of the team," Daboll said. "Wish Kadarius well."

Toney is under contract until the 2024 NFL season and holds a fifth-year option in 2025.

But one thing that may be a concern for the Chiefs once the deal is made official.

The wide receiver has missed the Giants' last five games due to a hamstring injury.

Last week, Toney claimed that the delay in his return to football action was because he tried to come back earlier than scheduled.

The Alabama native originally sustained the right hamstring injury during the Giants' training camp.

Then in Week 2, a game the Giants won over the Carolina Panthers, he re-injured the same hamstring.

To make matters worse, he also suffered an injury to his left leg during team practice on October 5.

Curiously, Toney put up a cryptic tweet recently alleging he was not really injured. That Twitter post has since been taken down.

In the limited action he has had so far this NFL season, Toney has accounted for two catches with zero yards.

Furthermore, it has been a rough start for Toney in his NFL career, missing 12 of a possible 24 career games because of a variety of injuries and a bout with COVID-19.

In addition, he has 41 catches for 420 yards in the 12 games he has played.

Once he is cleared, Toney gives Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes another option to stretch the field alongside tight end Travis Kelce and receiver Mecole Hardman.
