The Dallas Cowboys have been without their best player for the entirety of training camp, and he could be set to miss the team’s final two preseason games, at the very least. Head coach Jason Garrett told reporters Tuesday that he’s had positive conversations with Ezekiel Elliott, even though he’d prefer him to be practicing with the team.

“Zeke is someone we love. We love him as a guy. Love him as a player. He loves football,” Garrett told NFL Network’s Jane Slater when asked if his talks with Elliott have been positive.

Garrett’s comments come a day after Elliott’s agent said the running back felt disrespected by owner Jerry Jones. Jones joked, “Zeke, who?” after Saturday’s preseason game in response to a question about the running back.

“We trust that he’s getting himself ready physically, mentally and emotionally to play his best,” Garrett continued “Ideally, it’s best for him to be here. He knows that. We know that, but sometimes these things come up and you have to deal with them.”

Elliott is looking to sign a new contract with the Cowboys and is reportedly prepared to sit out the 2019 season if he doesn’t get the money he’s seeking. The 24-year-old has two years and $12.9 remaining on his current deal.

The Cowboys haven’t exactly missed Elliott during the preseason. Rookie running back Tony Pollard has been a suitable replacement in two contests.

The fourth-round draft pick led Dallas with 42 yards and a touchdown on five attempts in the Dallas’ 14-10 win over the Los Angeles Rams Saturday. Pollard had 16 yards on four attempts in Week 1 of the preseason.

Elliott has led the NFL in rushing yards per game in all three of his seasons with the Cowboys. He made the Pro Bowl in both 2016 and 2018.

Dallas has a 28-12 record when Elliott plays in the regular season.
