Another celebrity has been tapped to guest star on Season 3 of “Empire.” Former “The Cosby Show” star Phylicia Rashad is the latest joining the Fox show for a recurring role.

According to Variety, Rashad will play Diana Dubois, a wealthy New Yorker and the matriarch of one of the city’s most prominent African-American families. Diana is also the mother of city councilman Angelo Dubois, played by Taye Diggs. The outlet reports that Diana wants her son to work in higher office and stops at nothing to prepare him for the job.

However, it was previously revealed that Angelo doesn’t want to make millions of dollars working in the private sector and instead focuses his attention on local politics and community organizing. It’s also rumored that Diggs’ character could be a new love interest for Cookie Lyon (Taraji P. Henson).

Rashad joins a long list of celebrities making appearances on the hip-hop drama. Mariah Carey has been tapped to play Kitty, a singer who collaborates with Jamal (Jussie Smollett) for a song but has to help him overcome some difficulties before they finish their track. A sneak peek of “Empire” released last week showed the first look at Carey’s character. At one point in the short trailer, she’s seen telling Cookie: “You’ve always got a trick up your sleeve.” Carey’s episode will debut Oct. 5.

While at the Television Critics Association last month Henson told reporters that she had a great time filming with the “Obsessed” singer. “ She was great, she’s fabulous,” Henson said (via Yahoo! TV). “She’s beautiful to look at. She brings a sense of what Mariah brings to the music industry. She brought it to our show.” Henson also told “Extra” last week that Carey’s character is going to be good friends with Cookie. “She is a performer and she is helping Jamal get through his difficulties,” she added.

Other stars joining the show in guest roles include French Montana as music mogul Vaughn, Sierra McClain as a singer named Nessa and Birdman as himself. Entertainment Weekly also reported that rapper Kid Cudi has signed on to play Gram, a rapper who’s Hakeem’s (Bryshere Y. Gray) rival and Tiana’s (Serayah ) new boyfriend.

“Empire” Season 3 premieres Sept. 21 at 9 p.m. EDT on Fox.
