A three-week-old infant was killed by two men, one of whom was identified as the father. Both the accused have been arrested, police in Nigeria said Sunday.

The main suspect, Abdulkadir Ahmed reportedly asked his friend to lure his estranged wife to his shop under the pretext of seeking reconciliation with her on Oct. 11.

When the woman arrived outside the shop with her baby, Ahmed took the child from her and into his shop, while the friend, Hassan Sabo engaged the child's mother in a discussion outside, police spokesperson Ramhan Nansel told Vanguard.

Suddenly, the woman heard her baby screaming but fell silent within minutes. When Ahmed came out of the shop, the mother asked about her baby, to which the father responded saying the child had gone to sleep.

Not convinced by the answer, the child's mother stormed into the shop and found the body of her infant. Ahmed and Sabo escaped the scene immediately.

The mother filed a police complaint following which a manhunt was launched for both accused. Police arrived at the crime scene and took the child's body to Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital, Lafia, for an autopsy.

"The State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Adesina Soyemi ordered a thorough investigation into the unholy and wicked act," police said in a statement, according to Daily Trust.

"Police operatives attached to 'D' Division, Lafia, arrested the suspects Abdulkadir Ahmed and Hassan Sabo both males and 40yrs old of Ungwan Maina, Lafia for killing a three-week-old child."

An investigation is currently underway into the incident and the suspects will face charges of murder.

Earlier this month in Texas, a woman's boyfriend was arrested in connection with the death of a 10-month-old boy who was hospitalized with signs of physical abuse, including head injuries and bruises. Amonte Harris was on life support at Cook Children's Medical Center in Fort Worth for a week and had sustained both internal and external injuries. The suspect, identified as 22-year-old Dennilson Alejandro Uk, was charged with injury to a child/serious bodily injury.
