  • Fernando Verdasco beat Andy Murray in the bett1HULKS Indoors tournament in Germany
  • This is Verdasco's first victory since the second round of the Australian Open
  • Verdasco is set to face Alexander Zverev in the next round of the tournament

Fernando Verdasco earned a hard-fought victory against Andy Murray as he defeated the former world no. 1 player in straight sets in Cologne.

This marks his first win in months as his last victory was back in the second round of the Australian Open earlier this January. It was a 6-4, 6-4 win for the Spaniard as he advances to the next round of the bett1HULKS Indoors tournament in Germany.

"This is a very important victory for me for many reasons," Verdasco said after his match, ATP Tour reported.

This served as a big win for Verdasco as he and Murray are known as experienced veterans of the sport. At one point in their careers, they were the big names in top 10 rankings across the world.

In the past few years, Murray has developed into one of the biggest professionals in the sport. Despite being sidelined with major injuries, Murray remains resilient in continuing his singles career. He has won multiple majors, including two Wimbledon titles and one U.S. Open championship.

"Playing against a player like Andy, we have been playing together for all our careers," Verdasco said. "We've had really tough battles over the years. It's always a challenge and a motivation to play against someone like him. I'm very happy for that."

Verdasco is now set to face Alexander Zverev in the next round of the tournament. It will be a big challenge for Verdasco given how Zverev has risen to become one of the top players in the world.

Zverev was the finalist in this year’s U.S. Open where he fought Dominic Thiem. While he fell short of the title, he still gave Thiem a good match as they played a five-set thriller. Despite the momentum Zverev has as a top player, Verdasco assures that it will be a good match for him.

"I will try my best," Verdasco said. "I will enjoy it and hopefully, I will be able to play good and make a good performance."
