Last month, “Chicago Fire” Season 5 wrapped up with a major cliffhanger. The characters found themselves trapped inside a burning building. As of late, it is still unclear if some died at the scene. For instance, Casey (Jesse Spencer) did not know for sure if he would come out alive so he called his wife, Gabby (Monica Raymund), and told her how much he loves her.

But if there is one character who was surely in grave danger at that time, it would’ve been Mouch (Christina Stolte). After all, he was surrounded by flames, and he also collapsed at one point possibly due to a heart attack.

Meanwhile, NBC decided to renew “Chicago Fire” for another season in May. The network also announced the renewal of “Chicago P.D.” and “Chicago Med” at the time. Unfortunately, “Chicago Justice” did not make the cut. The series was axed by the network after only one season.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the ratings for the four shows were one of the main factors in their decision to either renew or cancel them. “Chicago Fire” averaged 9.8 million viewers and a 2.3 demo rating among audiences aged 18 to 49. “Chicago P.D.” averaged 8.2 million viewers and a 1.9 demo rating. “Chicago Med” garnered 8.3 million viewers and a 1.9 demo rating. However, “Chicago Justice” only averaged 8 million and a 1.5 demo rating.

Additionally, Deadline reported that series creator Dick Wolf has developed a difficult relationship with the network over the past couple of years. The “Chicago” franchise has not been as lucrative as it used to be as well.

“Chicago Fire” Season 6 will premiere on NBC on Sept. 8 at 10 p.m. EST.
