A Florida postal worker died Monday after being viciously attacked by five dogs, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.

Pamela Jane Rock, 61, of Melrose, a small community located about 50 miles southwest of Jacksonville, had been working in the Interlachen Lake Estates area on Sunday afternoon.

Surrounding neighbors found Rock lying on the ground and screaming for help as she was attacked by the dogs. The neighbors came to her rescue before she was taken to a hospital, where she died Monday evening from a cardiac arrest.

"One of the neighbors even brought his firearm along and fired several shots into the air and to the ground in an attempt to disrupt the attack," Putnam County Sheriff Chief Deputy Colonel Joseph Wells said at a news conference.

Police said Rock lost a massive amount of blood.

The dogs were described as mixed-breed and medium-sized. The dogs reportedly escaped from a nearby property. The owner may potentially face charges, according to Wells.

Wells said that animal control workers took the dogs into custody and would euthanize them at a later date.

"A postal family member lost her life in a dog bite attack. The U.S. Postal Service is deeply saddened at the loss of our employee. Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and her co-workers at this time," the U.S. Postal Service said in a statement.
