Over 2.9 million cars and SUVs have been recalled by Ford (F) for a defect that could cause them to unintentionally rollway even when they are parked.

The recall affects certain 2013 to 2019 Ford Escape, 2013 to 2018 C-Max, 2013 to 2016 Fusion, 2013 to 2021 Transit Connect, and 2015 to 2018 Edge models.

According to the recall notice, the impacted vehicles may have a damaged or missing bushing that could prevent shifting into the intended gear despite what is shown on the instrument panel. This could cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction, Ford said.

Even when the park position is selected, the vehicle could roll away, the automaker added.

In either case, there is a risk of a crash or injury.

To repair the rollaway issue, Ford dealers will replace the underhood shift bushing and add a protective cap over the shift cable bushing at no charge to the vehicle owner.

Affected Ford owners can expect to receive a recall notice starting June 27. Questions can be directed to Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332.

Ford said the root cause of the issue is “unknown,” but its investigation revealed that heat and humidity have the potential to breakdown the bushing material.

As of Wednesday at 9:49 a.m. ET, shares of Ford were trading at $12.31, up 11 cents or 0.94%.
