KEY POINTS

  • Liverpool are the defending champions in the Premier League
  • The Reds are currently 10 points behind Man City in the league table this season
  • Man City thrashed Liverpool 4-1 at Anfield on Sunday

Former Liverpool FC striker Stan Collymore has urged the Premier League champions to sign Tottenham Hotspurs’ key player Harry Kane ahead of the summer transfer window. Kane reportedly is also being chased by Manchester City.

After a successful Premier League season in 2019-20, Liverpool have drastically fallen behind in the title race in the underway campaign. Jurgen Klopp’s side is currently placed fourth in the 2020-21 league table, while Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City are 10 points ahead of the Reds and still have a game in hand.

"City are showing this season how strongly they can come back. You have to look at these things over four or five years and Liverpool will still be in the title talk in each of them. That said, they do need to wake up and smell the coffee, which means owners FSG spending money to go toe-to-toe with City in that period. It means that if City go out and buy Erling Haaland this summer then Liverpool must buy the next Robert Lewandowski or even put in a bid for Harry Kane," Collymore was quoted by TEAMtalk, as saying.

"What they can’t do is just say, ‘We have a really good XI, some youngsters coming through, and we can maintain our challenges that way,’ because there are too many other teams with the money to make sure that won’t be the case," Collymore, who represented Liverpool for two years during his playing career, said.

Manchester City are looking for a long-term replacement for their veteran playmaker Sergio Aguero, who is expected to leave Etihad at the end of the 2020-21 season. The former English champions have eyes on various soccer ahead of the summer market, including Spurs' Kane, Inter Milan’s Romelu Lukalu, and Borussia Dortmund’s young sensation Erling Haaland.
