KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United were held at a 1-1 draw at St. James' Park
  • Man Utd have only 3 wins in their last 5 league games
  • Edinson Cavani scored in Man Utd's 1-1 against Newcastle

Gary Neville said that Edinson Cavani needs to play more games while seniors Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes need to get rid of their "whinging" attitude after Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against Newcastle in the Premier League on Monday.

Cavani came off the bench to net the equalizer for Manchester United at St. James’ Park and hand his side a crucial point in the league.

Neville, who represented only Manchester United throughout his club career, slammed Ronaldo and Fernandes for their poor body language as the Red Devils struggled against Newcastle.

"I think when you mention body language. I said it after the Everton game earlier on in the season when Cristiano sort of walked off and I thought he put pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, he’s run off again tonight. He ran off at Watford when the manager was going to get sacked and at Norwich. I think Bruno’s whinging. They’re the two senior players in that dressing room, it’s devastating for the younger players if the two best players in that team are looking at the others as if you’re not good enough," Neville said on Sky Sports after Man Utd’s 1-1 draw.

Cavani has missed 16 games this season due to various injuries and lack of fitness. In addition, he has fallen down in the pecking order following the arrival of Ronaldo in the summer of 2021.

However, former Red Devils right-back Neville wants to see more of Cavani on the pitch.

"I think Cavani takes that away. I don’t think he wilts in the presence of Ronaldo or Fernandes, I think he stands up to them. He helps the younger players and I think he needs to be on the pitch. They need to get rid of that whinging atittude, they really do. You’ve got to go over and clap the fans at the end of the game," added Neville in the same interview.

In the last five league games, Manchester United have only three victories. The 1-1 draw Monday was their fourth draw of the season, while the Old Trafford side has managed to bag only eight victories from 18 games.

"I don’t care how you’ve played, what the result is, get over to them fans and clap them, walk off with your teammates. You have to do that, particularly when you’re the best player in the world. It’s annoyed me for about two months. The best players in your team, it’s devastating when they’re showing that look and body language to the younger ones. They have to help them," Neville further said.
