Retired Gen. David Petraeus, who stepped down last year as head of the Central Intelligence Agency after a distinguished U.S. Army career that took him to Iraq and Afghanistan, is going to work as an adviser for giant hedge fund KKR & Co. L.P. (NYSE:KKR).

KKR said on Thursday that Petraeus’ vast international network of contacts and broad familiarity with geopolitical trends will be of strategic value to a newly formed group within the firm that will focus on public policy, macroeconomic forecast, communications and advice on investing in developing economies.

The 60-year-old left the CIA in November after the public disclosure of an affair he had with his biographer, Paula Broadwell. Before his time in U.S. intelligence, Petraeus led the nation’s forces in Iraq and Afghanistan.
