“Grey’s Anatomy” will be returning with another thrilling installment when the long-running ABC series airs its highly anticipated eleventh season on Thursday, Sept. 25, at 8 p.m. EDT. According to reports, Shonda Rhimes, creator of the Emmy-award winning drama, is bringing the heat as well as the flashbacks to the upcoming season.

Kate Burton, who will be reprising her role as Ellis Grey during the Season 11 premiere, dished to TVLine that fans will get a chance to go back in time during episode 1. The actress explained that the flashback will help contextualize the shocking storyline of her and Dr. Richard Webber’s love child, Maggie.

During the Season 10 finale viewers were overwhelmed with emotions as they were forced to say farewell to the sassy Cristina Yang. However, the heartbreaking goodbye didn’t stop Rhimes from giving fans the cliffhanger of a lifetime. During the final moments of the finale, the show creator had Dr. Webber and Yang’s replacement, Margaret, have a heart-to-heart moment while sitting outside Grey Sloan Memorial hospital.

Margaret revealed the only reason she applied for Yang’s position is because her mother, who she never met due to being adopted, used to work at the very same facility.

Looking confused, Dr. Webber asked her who her mother is.

“Ellis Grey. Did you know her?” she asked, thus confirming Grey and Webber did have a child together.

“I am excited to see how the whole thing plays out,” Burton said, regarding the surprising storyline, “because James [Pickens Jr.] and I never really explored [the Ellis-Richard] relationship.”

According to Rhimes, she knew since Season 4 that she was eventually going to introduce Margaret into the “Grey’s Anatomy” story line.

“Because we've all known about it for so long, it's always been layered in. It's not a thing where we're going in and backdating. It's literally always been layered into the story line. We can literally go back and pull out moments of the show and I'm excited to do so, and point out where it was talked about. It's not going to be so hard to do,” she revealed to TVLine.

In addition to introducing little Margaret during the flashbacks, Rhimes has also cast a new version of a young Meredith.

A photo of "Grey's Anatomy" director Kevin McKidd and the adorable actress (who was sporting an equally as cute floral nightgown) was tweeted out for the public to gush over.
