Arizona might not share the same DNA as her daughter, but that doesn’t make the doctor any less of a parent to Sofia than, say, Callie or Sloan. Sofia’s adoptive mother makes that crystal clear while she’s on the stand during her custody battle, which will take place in the upcoming Season 12 installment of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

A sneak-peek video from episode 22 of the hit ABC series, titled “Mama Tried,” shows Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) going head-to-head with Callie’s (Sara Ramirez) lawyer. The attorney attempts to demean Arizona’s relationship with Sofia (Eva Ariel Binder) by stating that she’s not a biological parent.

“Hmm, she doesn’t want to go there!” Bailey (Chandra Wilson) says to Weber (James Pickens Jr.) as the two sit on the sidelines during the court session. And, boy, were they right. The snide comment angers Arizona, and she fires back at Callie’s lawyer with fury.

“I’m going to have to stop you before you continue for your own sake. You’re not going to imply that I am any less Sofia’s mother because we don’t share the same DNA,” Arizona begins. “Because that would be offense. It would be offensive to anyone in the room who has an adopted child or is an adopted child.”

Arizona adds in the promo video that she chose to be Sofia’s mother. “It did not fall into my lap,” she says, proving just how dedicated of a mother she is. “There was a choice. I could stay or I could run, and I chose motherhood.”

But motherhood isn’t the only choice Arizona makes in episode 22. In the middle of the custody battle, she decides to return to the hospital when she gets a 911 call from April (Sarah Drew). The emergency text April sends reveals that her and Arizona’s patient, Jenny (Morgan Lily), is in need of help.

Jenny made her Grey Sloan Memorial debut in episode 17 of Season 12, when she arrived to the hospital with an aneurysm and a secret pregnancy. And according to the synopsis for the forthcoming episode, Jenny will be admitted to the hospital again in episode 22. But this time it looks like her baby is the one in danger — that is, if Arizona doesn’t get back to the hospital to help.

Arizona leaves court stating that ultimately Sofia will be healthy, safe and loved regardless of who the judges chooses to give sole custody to. But Jenny’s baby … well, she might not survive the night unless she leaves.

“Grey’s Anatomy” airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. EDT on ABC.
