Popular U.S. gym chain Planet Fitness (PLNT) confirmed on Monday that its guests will be required to wear masks at all times starting on Aug. 1. The policy was announced in an email to the chain’s members. Visitors who forget their mask will be given one.

“Effective August 1, all Planet Fitness members (you!) & guests will be required to wear a mask inside our clubs, at all times,” the email statement read. “This added safety precaution also helps us to remain open to serve you and keep you healthy and moving!”

The New Hampshire-based company is among the largest fitness chains in the country, with over 2,000 locations in operation. Most of these locations have already reopened, with safety and cleaning guidelines developed in accordance with local officials. Masks have previously been mandated for employees

“Wearing a mask in public is proven to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, and as a leader in the fitness industry, and your long-term partner in health and wellness, we are committed to doing everything in our power to ensure the health and safety of our Planet Fitness community,” the company’s official policy page reads. “Thank you in advance for your support and adherence to this policy. This added safety precaution also helps us to remain open to serve you and keep you healthy and active.”

This new mandate comes as cases of coronavirus have surged in over 40 states. According to a Reuters report, these outbreaks have been largely linked to lax public health policies at institutions like restaurants, bars and gyms.
