KEY POINTS

  • Edie Falco will play Hillary Clinton on the "Impeachment" season of "American Crime Story"
  • Clive Owen will play Bill Clinton opposite Beanie Feldstein's Monica Lewinsky in Season 3
  • The season will focus on Clinton's affair with Lewinsky and subsequent impeachment proceedings

Edie Falco has been roped in to play Hillary Clinton in "American Crime Story" Season 3, which revolves around former President Bill Clinton's impeachment and affair with then-White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

The four-time Emmy winner, who is best known for her roles on the hit shows "The Sopranos" and "Nurse Jackie," will portray the then-first lady and future secretary of state in the third season of Ryan Murphy's FX anthology series, "Impeachment," which stars Clive Owen as Bill Clinton, Entertainment Weekly reported.

The "Impeachment: American Crime Story" cast members also include Beanie Feldstein as Lewinsky, Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp, Annaleigh Ashford as Paula Jones, Billy Eichner as Matt Drudge and Betty Gilpin as Ann Coulter.

Unlike Tripp, Jones and Lewinksy, however, the first lady will not have a major role in the upcoming season, according to FX CEO John Landgraf. "Hillary is actually not a significant character in Impeachment because it's really told from the point of view of these women who were really far from the center of power," he told The Hollywood Reporter in 2019.

Meanwhile, Paulson, who is also executive producing the upcoming season of "American Crime Story," told Entertainment Weekly last month that she has been shooting this project and "American Horror Story" Season 10 simultaneously.

"The character I'm playing this year on 'Horror Story' has some issues, let's just put it that way," she said.

Without revealing much, the actress shared, "I have a hair color I've never had in life nor in the show. That's what I can tell you. And I have a great name. I have a great name, which I can't tell you."

She did reveal that she will be seen in a wig in both "American Horror Story" and "American Crime Story."

"One of them I prefer over the other because one is just cooler and the other one makes me look like Linda Tripp. That's the thing. It's just a different experience," Paulson shared.

Talking about playing Tripp, who is Lewinsky's confidante and co-worker in the Defense Department in "Impeachment," Paulson said, "Linda actually behaved in ways that were truly questionable. The real challenge of playing her is trying to find a way not to justify her actions, but to understand them enough that I can play that truthfully because standing in judgment of her only complicates my job."

But for her, this complexity is what made the season "exciting to do and totally terrifying because it's just a lot."

"Impeachment: American Crime Story" is based on the book "A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Story of the Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President" by Jeffrey Toobin. The season does not currently have a premiere date.
