  • Mike Tyson invited James Toney in an exhibition match by being his next opponent
  • Toney responded to Tyson on social media
  • The former multi-division champ is open for exhibition boxing matches

Mike Tyson may have found a suitable opponent for his next exhibition match.

Amid the pandemic, Tyson managed to pull off a successful exhibition fight against Roy Jones Jr. Thrilled with his accomplishment, “Iron Mike” vowed to do more of it, urging other fellow boxing legends to take part as well.

Now, former multi-division titleholder James Toney has expressed his desire to take on Tyson.

On his official Instagram account, Toney posted a short clip from Tyson’s 2010 music video “Every Little Step with Mike Tyson & Wayne Brady,” intending to poke fun at “The Baddest Man on the Planet.”

However, Toney insisted that he is serious about his intentions to face Tyson saying, “You better not wear a mini-skirt to our fight. No jokes. Lights Out!”

Toney’s post appeared to be a response to Tyson’s previous call-out. Earlier this year, the 54-year-old attempted to lure Toney during a brief talk with Elie Seckbach of EsNews.

According to Tyson, once Toney managed to get in shape, he could help him make “some money” through an exhibition match.

“He’s [Toney] still 300 pounds man. We need him to be slim,” Tyson said. “James, get in shape baby! We can do it. You know I wanna get you some money.”

Like Jones, Toney has also held multiple belts in different weight classes during his active years in the sport, from middleweight all the way up to cruiserweight.

Atop the rare accolade, the 52-year-old has never been knocked out in his entire professional career, and in 2003, he famously beat one of Tyson’s ultimate heavyweight nemesis Evander Holyfield.

But for Tyson, none of that matters now as Toney still needs to make a living.

“But he [doesn’t] have no money from those hundred fights,” Tyson said of Toney’s career. “So what’s so good about that? Tell me the winning side of that.”

Tyson had recently revealed a potential target for his next exhibition match. Based on the boxing legend’s assessment, he’s looking to step inside the ring again before the end of May this year.

"End of May, where you [Canelo Alvarez] fought, [in Miami] same ring you fought in,” Tyson told Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in a recent episode of “Hotboxin’ with Mike Tyson.” "May 29th, May 31, something like that, right where you fought, same ring."

Toney, on the other hand, appears to be yearning for an exhibition match since last year.

“To all those bringing up my name in these exhibition fights, count me in,” Toney said last year. “If they want to do it, give me a call. I ain’t going nowhere.”
