  • Jerry Jones bought the Cowboys for $150 million in 1989
  • The team is now valued at $5.5 billion
  • Jones invests in oil drilling and real estate

Dallas Cowboys' Jerry Jones is a multi-billionaire, but he is not the richest NFL team owner.

The title belongs to David Tepper of the Carolina Panthers who has an estimated net worth of $13 billion, according to Forbes' list of the 400 richest people in America. Jones comes second on the list with $8.6 billion. With his massive fortune, the publication ranks Jones as the 56th richest person in the country.

Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke ranked third among NFL team owners with $8.3 billion. He is followed by Jacksonville Jaguars' Shahid Khan ($7.8 billion) and Miami Dolphins' Stephen Ross ($7.2 billion).

Though he isn't the richest NFL owner, Jones is certainly one of the most influential, if not the most powerful, one. According to Celebrity Net Worth, there are only two owners who also act as general managers in the league: Jones and Cincinnati Bengals owner Mike Brown.

Jones, who has been the owner and GM of the Cowboys since 1989, was also inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2017. His contributions to the league and its success simply cannot be denied.

The 78-year-old helped in boosting the league’s popularity since he became owner of the Cowboys. He fought for Fox becoming the NFL's primary broadcast network, and it paved the way for the league to earn billions from television revenues.

Jones' $150 million investment in the Cowboys also turned into gold as the team is now valued at $5.5 billion.

Aside from making money from his NFL team, the Los Angeles, California native has other lucrative business ventures. Majority of his net worth came from the oil industry. He is the majority shareholder of Comstock Resources, a publicly traded oil and gas company in Texas.

Jones is also into real estate. He lives in a mansion in Dallas that carries a price tag of $20 million. His company, Blue Star Land, turned a 200-acre site into Star Business Park.

On the personal side, Jones is married to Eugenia Jones, with whom he shares three children: Stephen Jones, Charlotte Jones and Jerry Jones Jr. All three of his children hold positions with the Cowboys.

Making controversial remarks is another area where Jones has proven himself capable. He supported the kneeling of players during the national anthem at the height of the racial injustice protests but later urged fans to respect the views of players regarding whether they would like to kneel or not.

Jones said in an interview with USA Today that the answer lies in balance. “We also recognize the times we’re in and the need for social justice,” he added.
