Kansas City Chiefs News: KC Could Lose Dee Ford, Spencer Ware In Free Agency This Offseason

The Kansas City Chiefs were indisputably successful in 2019. The team won the AFC West for the third year in a row, finished 12-4 and locked up the top seed in the AFC playoffs. They even won a home playoff game for the first time in 25 years and were a few plays away from potentially going to the Super Bowl.

If they want to keep it up, they might have to do it without some important players. Multiple Chiefs starters or regular contributors are unrestricted free agents after this season, meaning they can sign with any other team if they so desire. In total, the Chiefs have 15 players on expiring contracts, according to Spotrac.

Easily the biggest name on the list is outside linebacker Dee Ford. The 27-year-old had a career year in 2018, finishing with 13 sacks. His name is slightly tarnished in Kansas City right now because he lined up offsides on what would have been a game-sealing interception in the AFC title game, but Ford will command big money on the market if the Chiefs do not retain his services.

NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport reported over the weekend that the Chiefs were considering using the franchise tag on Ford.

Running backs Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware have performed admirably for the Chiefs for the past few years, but both could leave this offseason. The Chiefs just extended Damien Williams after he filled in for an injured Ware and played well. Williams had three touchdowns against the Patriots on Sunday and rushed for more than 100 yards in the team’s playoff win over the Indianapolis Colts.

Other longtime offensive contributors who could leave include receiver Chris Conley, tight end Demetrius Harris and starting center Mitch Morse. Cornerback Steven Nelson is also a notable name on the list of unrestricted free agents.
