KEY POINTS

  • FC Barcelona defeated Real Mallorca in their return with a 4-0 victory
  • La Liga resumed their season in an eventful manner as a pitch invader was seen attempting to take selfies with Lionel Messi
  • La Liga condemns the stunt especially during the time of a global pandemic

The games are back and FC Barcelona is picking up right where they left off with a 4-0 drubbing victory over Real Mallorca. While the smooth victory doesn’t come off as a big surprise, one notable instance was a pitch invader chasing after Lionel Messi among other stars.

It was a big day for the league as the games have finally resumed after the suspension of play due to the global pandemic. While the situation hasn’t been fully recovered since the onset of the coronavirus, this has been a big step towards normality. While attendance to the stadium has been limited, it seems that an unwelcomed fan was still able to enter the premises and took selfies with the players.

The stunt is nothing new in professional sports but it’s a first during the era of social distancing. Per Goal.com, the league does not take the issue lightly especially at a time like this. With the need to be responsible in this global health crisis, having these interactions are the last thing needed for the sport.

"La Liga will file the appropriate legal action, considering that this was a criminal act," the league’s statement said.

This is an important matter as bouncing back amidst the threats of the coronavirus would need the cooperation of everyone.

"La Liga would also like to express its absolute condemnation of this kind of behaviour, which puts in risk the health of others and the integrity of our competition,” the league continued.

Throughout this season’s campaign, Messi’s Barcelona has climbed to the top of the team standings. Boasting a record of 19 wins, four draws and five losses, they are still the first seed of La Liga with Real Madrid trailing behind them. With a league-leading 61 points, they’re looking to finish the rest of the campaign strong.

It will be interesting to see how the rest of the league moves forward with the current situation. Expectations are high for every team as they’re seeking to make the most out of the season that has been affected heavily by the existing global circumstances.
