KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United defeated Burnley 2-0 on Wednesday
  • City beat reigning champions Liverpool 3-2
  • Man Utd's quarter-final clash will take place at Old Trafford

Manchester United will take on League One side Charlton Athletic in the quarter-finals of the 2022-23 League Cup.

The fixture will take place at Old Trafford on Jan. 10. Charlton are the only non-Premier League side left in the competition. They defeated Brighton on penalties in the fourth round of the League Cup on Wednesday.

Manchester United progressed to the last-eight round by defeating Burnley 2-0 at Old Trafford on Wednesday. Christian Eriksen and Marcus Rashford were on the goals chart for the Red Devils.

Bruno Fernandes, who captained Manchester United in their latest victory over Burnley, will miss his side's quarter-final clash against Charlton as he will be forced to sit out after two yellow cards.

Fernandes picked up a yellow card in the 89th minute, for a foul on Connor Roberts, which was his second in the competition. He was also cautioned during the 4-2 victory over Aston Villa last month.

Since the 2019-20 campaign, domestic bookings only count for that specific competition. If a player receives a caution in consecutive games in the Carabao Cup, they miss the next tie. All yellow cards accumulated are erased after the quarter-final stage and nobody will be unavailable for a final due to accumulating bookings, according to Manchester United's official website.

The Burnley game was the Red Devils' first appearance since the long World Cup break. Erik ten Hag's side are set to resume their Premier League campaign on Dec. 27 as they are going to face off against Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Manchester City beat current holders Liverpool FC 3-2 in the Round of 16 on Thursday. Erling Haaland opened the scoring in the first half before Liverpool midfielder Fabio Carvalho netted an equalizer for the defending champions. A couple of minutes into the second half, Riyad Mahrez put Pep Guardiola's City in the lead again before Mohamed Salah netted a 48th-minute equalizer.

However, City's Nathan Ake scored a 58th-minute winner to push the eight-time champions City to the next round of the League Cup.

Guardiola and Co are scheduled to face off against Southampton in the quarters. The St. Marys' side beat Lincoln City 2-1 in the Round of 16.

Nottingham Forest will welcome Wolves while Newcastle face Leicester City.

The quarter-finals of the League Cup will take place in the second week of January.
