KEY POINTS

  • Messi became the first-ever player to win 500 matches in Spanish soccer
  • Messi has scored 20 goals this season
  • He clinched the record in Barca's win over Leganes in Copa del Rey

Lionel Messi registered another milestone during FC Barcelona’s recent win in Copa del Rey on Thursday.

Barca’s 5-0 victory over Leganes was 500th win in Messi’s account, making him the first-ever player in the history of Spanish soccer to win those many matches.

The Argentine needed 710 games to get to the record and he will hope to add more to the tally before he ends his decorated career at Barca’s Nou Camp. Messi even scored a brace, while the other scorers for Barca were Antoine Greizmann, Clement Lenglet and Arthur. The win also meant Barca have qualified for the last-eight of Copa del Rey yet again.

Greizmann and Lenglet put Barca 2-0 up in the first half before Messi netted their third goal soon after the play resumed following the halftime break. Arthur scored in the 77th minute before Messi netted his second goal of the day in the final minutes of the second half. The triumph was important for both Barca and their new coach Setien.

The new manager has been under massive pressure as Barca has not been up to their mark ever since he took over from Ernesto Valverde earlier this month. Barca’s latest loss in La Liga, which came against Valencia made the situation a bit intense in their dressing room. The defeat pushed them down to the second place on the La Liga points table, three behind arch-rivals Real Madrid.

However, the reigning champions can still aim for a third straight La Liga title provided they return to winning ways in the upcoming match.

Messi’s brace Thursday took his goals’ tally to 20 in the ongoing 2019-20 season and he will have the opportunity to increase that further when the Nou Camp side welcome Levante on Sunday in their La Liga clash.
