  • Luis Diaz is nursing a knee injury
  • He suffered the injury in Liverpool's defeat to Arsenal in September
  • Diaz is expected to miss at least 13 games

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has offered a worrying update on winger Luis Diaz's latest injury.

Terming Diaz's injury a "proper smash in the face," Klopp on Sunday confirmed the Colombian striker will take more time to return to action. Diaz has been ruled out since September when he suffered a knee injury during Liverpool's 3-2 defeat to Arsenal at Emirates Stadium in the Premier League.

Liverpool are in Dubai for their winter camp, with a few players missing as they are in Qatar for the World Cup. Diaz returned to training last week. However, he has been sent back to the U.K. for further assessment after complaining of knee discomfort.

"Yeah, he was not in the best possible place. It's clear it's a big disappointment for all of us, for him as well. It was a non-situation in training, honestly – nothing, felt something. [He] didn't feel a lot next day but we wanted to be really cautious and said, 'OK, come on, let's have a look,'" Klopp told Liverpool's official website.

"Yeah, then the news came and it was a proper smash in the face. But that's it now," he added.

Diaz, who scored four goals and provided three assists in 12 matches in all competitions for Liverpool this season before the injury, is expected to miss at least 13 games.

On Sunday, Liverpool lost 3-1 to Lyon in a club-friendly game in Dubai after Mohamed Salah failed to score from the spot and young Harvey Elliot was forced off the field with an injury. The two sides even took part in a penalty shootout, which Liverpool again lost 5-3.

Klopp gave a rather positive injury update about 19-year-old Elliot.

"Harvey got a knock before we scored, Harvey got a knock. But I think we were lucky. He looks fine now but he feels it, that's normal, there was contact. But I hope we were lucky in that moment," Klopp said in the same interview.

Liverpool's next friendly fixture is against AC Milan on Friday. After this, the Anfield side will be in action only after the World Cup. Liverpool's first competitive match after the international break is a League Cup meeting with Manchester City on Dec. 22 at Etihad Stadium.
